Vitamix vs. Blendtec vs. HealthMaster vs. Ninja

7/3/2012

I reviewed the Vitamix, Blendtec, and the Healthmaster in a previous blog post here, however that was over a year ago and needs to be updated!  My experiences with each machine have evolved and I've used a new appliance, the Ninja, which I need to add to the mix!

Vitamix

Picture
This is the cream of the crop - the ultimate blender that everyone should own.  My use of my Vitamix (I've had both the 5000 and the 5200) over the past four years has cemented my unwavering loyalty to this brilliant machine.  I bought my high powered blender the instant I decided the raw lifestyle was worth investing into. I've taken it on trips, on airplanes (checked & carry-on!), even on my honeymoon! Not only does it help me create all my raw vegan dishes, but it saves me tons of time.  It grinds nuts and seeds, completely bursts the cell walls of plants to release that incredible chlorophyll, breaks down frozen fruit to make ice cream, in fact I haven’t found anything my Vitamix cannot do.  When people ask if I miss hot foods (as I don't cook anything), I demonstrated how my Vitamix warms up my food.  There is no heating element, but it runs at 240 mph and the friction heats up my soups, sauces, dips, etc.

The only problem with the Vitamix?  It’s expensive!!!!!  If you buy a new Deluxe Vitamix 5200, with all the bells and whistles, it comes out to $650.  HOWEVER! You can also buy a Vitamix that has been “factory reconditioned”  for $329.00! I always recommend buying Factory Reconditioned! If you put in this code when you check out, you get free shipping ($25 savings!): 06-005351.

People are always asking if there are other blenders out there that are cheaper, yet have the same performance.  I have personally used three others that come close, but I will stress that NO BLENDER have the same performance as the Vitamix, in my experiences.  Now mind you, I use my Vitamix 3-8 times a day, and have used each of the following blenders at least a half dozen times each while teaching classes.

Blendtec

Picture
The first is a Blendtec, the rival to the Vitamix. It’s slightly more affordable, coming in at $454 for the “Wild Side” (deluxe version), $434 for the Basic Version, and $384 for the Factory Reconditioned Basic.  It’s slightly more powerful than the Vitamix, coming in at 1560 Watts vs. the Vitamix’s 1380 Watts. The Basic comes with a 32 oz. pitcher, the Wild Side has a 44 oz. pitcher, and the Vitamix has a 64 oz. pitcher. The Blendtec has a broader based pitcher – easier to get your food out and nothing gets trapped under the blades. Lastly, the Blendtec is programmable and you can set it and walk away and it will shut itself off  The Blendtec can also warm up your liquids and dips, which is awesome for a raw foodist.  All in all, the Blendtec is a GREAT BUY.  If you can find one, go for it.

BUT…there are some major drawbacks.  First, it does not come with a tamper – an instrument to push food into the blades.  Therefore, you need to cut and dice your food smaller so it will move AND you CANNOT make Raw Vegan Banana Ice Cream in this blender. :/ That’s a big part of my diet, so I cannot imagine having the Blendtec permanently. Second, even though the base of the pitcher is larger (my Vitamix pitcher is tapered), it has problems with small amounts of food.  The blades will spin if there isn't enough food to move around - and while it's difficult to do small amounts in the Vitamix, the tamper makes it possible.  Also you cannot fill it to the top with food and expect it to blend.  I can make a full 64 ounces of Green Smoothie in my Vitamix, but you can only fill the 44 oz container half way!  Third, the larger motor doesn’t do any more than I need, but it is a LOT louder – which is not so good when you have kids with sensitive hearing, babies, or need to do any food prep when people are sleeping.  And fourth, with all its settings (ice cream, dips, smoothies, etc.), it's much harder to work manually.  When trying to make a dip out of cashews, for example, you need to run the dip setting two to four times to get the same consistency with the Vitamix.

It's a good machine, but you can get a Vitamix for roughly the same price.  I'd spend the money on the Vitamix.

HealthMaster

Picture
I have had the opportunity to try out Montel William’s HealthMaster.   At 4 easy payments of $49.99 (plus S&H), it’s by far the cheapest at $200.  It comes in at 1100 watts of power, which isn’t much less than Vitamix’s 1380 watts.  It has a monster 70 oz. pitcher that has a nice broad base where no food gets stuck. It comes with a tamper! Yaaay!  Raw Vegan Ice cream, here we come!  AND…the base is programmable just like the Blendtec.

Here come the con’s. First, like the Blendtec, even though the base of the pitcher is larger (my Vitamix pitcher is tapered), I have problems doing small amounts of food.  One cup of dip in the HealthMaster just  spins…doesn’t mix, even with the tamper.  Second, the lower wattage means that it just isn’t as powerful and doesn’t blend as smooth or creamy as the Vitamix or the Blendtec.  I tried to make a pie crust (crushed nuts and fruit) in the HealthMaster and it got stuck in the pitcher, and I had to take it all out and use another appliance.  The pitcher has pockets where food gets caught and I can’t just spatula it down to the bottom…I’m not sure if you can see from the picture.  The motor is ridiculously loud and slightly smelly (which the manufacturer says will wear off within six months).  Lastly, it has two locking mechanisms that sound like a wonderful safeguard but are actually quite annoying.  The thing won’t run unless the pitcher is locked to the base and the lid is locked to the pitcher.  Both locks are quite difficult to engage and after working with it for a half an hour, my fingers were starting to blister. I got used to it quickly, but my friend said she was less likely to work with it because of this feature.  It also doesn't run at the speeds of the previous two machines, which means it won't warm up your food. It's a great machine for the price, at nearly half the price of the other two machines, so the frugal girl in me gives it one thumb up!

Ninja

Picture
Lastly, I've had more experience with the Ninja than with the previous two machines because it's far more affordable, available, and everyone seems to be getting one!  This machine is wonderfully unique in that it has multiple blades.  Because of this, a tamper is less necessary to push food into the blades - there are blades in the middle and on top!  It has a programmable base with 1000 watts of power (only 100 less than the HealthMaster!), has a wonderfully easy to use 72 ounce container.  All in all, they have taken a little bit of everything and made a great machine.  AND - it's only $100!!!!  That's crazy!

Picture

I've also gotten to play with the Ninja Prep - which is even cheaper at $50-75, depending on where it's sold.  However, it has more than HALF the wattage of the blender (400 watts!), and in turn cannot do many things (like make dips & sauces out of nuts) well. It does make small batches of things rather well and I was able to make a few dishes with ease (my Orange UnChicken, Green Smoothies!, and Pinky Pudding)

However, you get what you pay for.  With the Ninja, you pay a fraction of the price for a fraction of the ability.  I cannot make the same quality of dips, sauces, desserts, smoothies, and ice cream is out of the picture. It does many amazing things and is far better for making Green Smoothies than a traditional blender (Oster or Hamilton Beach).

Each of the machines listed come with recipe books that are definitely a part of the price - wonderful recipes that get you to use the machine and eat healthier.  Sure, they aren't raw vegan, but they are homemade from scratch and encourage you to move away from processed foods. That's the first step - less processed, more whole foods!

So there we are.  Four different high speed blenders.  Each of the blenders tackled Green Smoothies with ease and are amazing blenders.  I still recommend the Vitamix.  It is worth the investment and even if you aren’t raw in any capacity it is wonderful for your kitchen.  Not to mention, the Vitamix has been around since 1937 and is made in the US.  If a machine has a warranty, I would trust a company that has been around more then ten years and has perfected the craft that they are in.  Just my two cents...

If I have moved you toward the Vitamix and are interested in purchasing one, use this code for free shipping (06-005351)  and go here!  I hope this helped!!!!

Hi There,

First off..congrats on your wedding!!!

My mother has a a brand new in the box HealthMaster...she got hypnotized by the infomercial and has not taken it out of the box or even used it once. So if any of your students would like to make an offer...I'm sure she would take it. I think she paid $300 for it.

You can give them my phone number. 602-290-2097

Cheers,
Annie

Talk about doubling your money! I am interested in the HealthMaster and watched the infomercial. The selling price
is 3 payments of $49.95.. Duh, think that is more like $150. I
don't believe S&H is $150 as well.

Just wanted to add my two cents. I bought this machine several years ago and I was very dissatisfied. It's loud, it's clumsy, it smells, it leaks oil and if you are looking for the best bang for your buck, DON'T waste your time with this machine. Infomercials are made to sell sell sell and they have. Customer service for this machine is also horrible so I'll end with this "buyer BEWARE" I sold mine for $75.00 bucks and was happy to wave bye bye to it.

I paid over $300 for mine, as well. It is the Elite model, and I also paid extra for the BPA- free version. I wish I could send it back, but I threw the box away, as I was setting it up. Good for purees, and anything you have to saturate with liquids. Other than that, it will spin, while everything gets pushed aside. Forget about making doughs! That's a CROCK! If you're in to just make smoothies, it's a good buy. Cleaning is effortless!

To answer some of the comments...there are 2 Healthmaster Blender being sold on their website! The people that said they paid $300.00 actually did!

Wow, there are many errors in the review of the Blendtec above. First, YES YOU CAN DO ICE CREAM. I saw that done today, in like 30 second. Second, there is an optional 90 oz. container for it. Third, IT DOES NOT NEED A TAMPER. The blades on the Blendtec work differently than the Vitamix, and they suck the food down. And it is NOT harder to work than a Vitamix, rather its EASIER, because you can push a setting and walk away. With nuts, you just need to push the setting it receommends. Lastly, of of course its louder than the Vitamix - the motor is much bigger! 2 hp on the Vitamix vs. 3 hp on the Blendtec. Most of the time, for the minute or so you have it running, the noise level should not be a big deal. If you have to do cooking late at night, you just might have to plan for that. But again, it only needs to run for less than a minute most of the time.

Hi Renee,

When it comes to making Raw Vegan Ice Cream out of bananas - it is VERY difficult, and doesn't come close to the Vitamix, because the tamper is necessary to push the bananas into the blades. Regular ice cream - I'm sure that's rather easy.

I've tried to make Cashew Cheeze, Creamy Spinach Dip, or my Sunny Hummus in Blendtecs before - and they all either didn't come out as smooth or I ended up pour the concoction into my Vitamix to finish it up to the consistency that I preferred.

I'm just speaking from my own personal experience, having used both machines for public demonstrations. I'm not an expert, just giving my opinions. :)

If anyone wants to make just Vegan ice cream, there is a brand new wonderful machine out called a "Yonos" for under $40. All you do is put in frozen bananas.....or whatever fruit you prefer.....down the feeding tube & hit the power button. It's pure fruit ice cream & tastes delicious. Ice cream is all it makes though

If you got the Blendtec twister jar you would find a lot of those "difficult" things to be much easier. Just a suggestion.

Actually, I make raw banana ice cream w/ my Blendtec all the time & find it a lot easier than my Vitamix. I didn't have to use a tamper w/ the Blendtec whereas w/ the Vitamix I'd have to stand there & keep mashing the contents w/ the tamper. I have chunks of frozen bananas that I use....perhaps u used whole frozen bananas? I haven't tried that yet.

Thanks for clarifying some thing items in the review. I agree completely. There is a button right on it labeled "ice cream". And the presets on the Blendtec work great, which in a lot of cases does make it easier to use. I haven't come across a task yet where the preset has not been accurate.

I agree with the above comments about the blendtec; I bought mine many years ago and it does not need a tamper to move things around. The blades act like a vortex moving things in the container. I love mine, does everything.!

are you sure you are blending for long enough? whenever you add kale to the smoothie, you have to blend for at least twice as long, but I manage to get it completely smooth in a crappy magic bullet, so you should be able to get it smooth an any of these far superior machines..

Renee - I've been using K-Tec blenders and Blendtec blenders since the company was created. If you are serious about using a Blendtec blender in the manner the readers of this blog most likely intend, you will need a tamper. Professionals can go without one, your average blog reader cannot.

Hi Trav, Hi Brendon,

Perhaps someday I'll be a "professional" at using a Blendtec, but the problem is that my Vitamix does such a great job that I'll never need to practice with a Blendtec. :)

I'm glad you enjoyed the article!

I currently own the Blendtech, and use it 2 to 3 times daily. I would have to respectfully disagree. The problem most users run into in comparing this with the Vitamix is that they load it backwards. You must put soft items of the Blendtech on the bottom, hard ice on top. If you do this it will blend fully every time. As to making ice cream, I made some last night. So again, I disagree. Also I load the qildside jar to capacity every time. It never fails to blend completely.

Hi Chris,

When I've made things with the Blendtec, I can't seem to get a good quality when I fill it to the top, like I do with my Vitamix. I sought out Blendtec to find out why.

Their FAQs on their website explains:
"Our Basic Pitcher holds approximately 2 quarts. When you add ingredients, you want to fill it about half way to allow room for blending. Our WildSide pitcher holds approximately 3 quarts. This allows you to make larger batches, but again, fill only about half way."

I completely agree with Renee's comment above. The review of the BlendTec is just flat out wrong. I've made ice cream in it myself, I've filled the jar 90% full of veggies and made green smoothies, no problem, and I've never needed a tamper. I've used VitaMix and BlendTec and I like them both a lot, but I purchased a BlendTec and still enjoy using it after 6 years of solid use.

Thank you, Haley! I appreciate this post greatly! Sounds like you have a few followers that are passionate about their BlendTec:-) I was going to ask you about the NutriBullet, but from your posting you have helped me with the education of the WATT for each. I can see how the NutriBullet would be much like a NinjaPrep. Not exactly what I am looking for to take off with ease. I saw the BlendTec at Costco yesterday and yet didn't stop to investigate it's features. I love all the features about Vitamix, I wonder if the refurbished would be okay?

You are VERY welcome. :) Yes, I'm just as passionate about my Vitamix, so I love their fire!

The Nutribullet seems to make smaller quantities, which is definitely a plus.

As for the refurbished Vitamix - I love mine! You get a brand new container, tamper, plug, but with a machine that was returned (usually to get a discount on a brand new one) and taken apart and put back together as good (if not better) than new. It still has a five year warranty, as well. Totally worth it - and a great price!

I just bought a used Vitamix 5200, it was about 4 years old, but I got it for $200. I had a Kitchen Aid, before this. The thing that I didn't like about the Kitchen Aid, was it's soft start feature causes items to splash up on the lid. I just wish I could have gotten the users manual/recipe book that originally came with Vitamix, but the person was moving so she didn't know where it was.

I use my Nutribullet twice every day, and love it. I was so impressed with it I bought one for each of my daughters. It is great for a single person, since you can make a smoothie in around 40 seconds after inserting the ingredients. I use frozen kale, spinach, collard greens, celery, to 1/2 way and then fruit and nuts, and it emulsifies everything. Pretty neat for a $100 device.

I've used the Nutribullet before, it's a great deal for the price.

It doesn't have the capabilities of the Vitamix, or the longevity, but if you are looking to spend around $100, it's a good buy.

I'm glad you are satisfied with yours!

The NutriBullet is ok for what it is...a small "blender" mainly for smoothies. Other than that, it doesn't hold a candle to the others. I got the NB for Christmas 2012 and within 6 months 3 three plastic containers all cracked...cheap plastic. Furthermore, I noticed the blade contraption also started to crack. The NB has become quite loud, as well. I tried to email the company for warranty replacement and not a single word. I'm guessing their emails go into a "black hole". I would not waste your money on the NB unless you want to just make smoothies quickly in the AM...that's what I use it for, nothing else. It doesn't liquify like the others but does a good enough job for me. Looks like I'll need a VM or BT soon.

Perhaps it's a guy thing. I have Vitamix that has lasted for over 12 yrs, however, once I got the Blendtec, the Vitamix has become more of a dust collector. I agree with Rick & Chris above. There isn't anything that the Vitamix can do that the Blendtec can't do better imo. I don't see the banana ice cream problem at all. I have also filled my Blendtec to the top w/ veggies & fruits & it doesn't have any problems. However "it has problems with small amounts of food"...how small are we talking? Like 1/2 a cup? 1/3 cup? 1/4 cup? Because I just manually control the speed w/ small quantities & really don't have any problems.

Hi Jason,

I've heard more and more stories like your own. When buying an expensive product, take a look to see how long the company has been around. The HealthMaster came out a few years ago - brand new company that hasn't worked out all the "bugs" yet. The Ninja came out around the same time and I've heard some serious complaints there as well. The Blendtec has been since 1975, but the Vitamix is the oldest company by far creating blenders since 1969.

It makes a difference on what's been worked out. The newest Vitamix has many predecessors that had to be used and abused to understand how to make it better and better.

Jason, I too bought the Health Master and it too has lasted about 6 months and I too payed for the upgraded motor with the supposedly shorter (to fit under the counters... NOT) base. I loved it! At least until it stopped blending. The only reason I didn't get a VitaMix (my dream blender) was because of the price. If I'm not able to get a replacement base (not paying for it again for only 6 months of use) I'm going to Costco to get a new VitaMix, damn the price!

James, she uses frozen bananas to make Raw Vegan nice cream. Considering the bananas are much more dense than ice, milk, sugar and salt, it's not easy and needs a blender with a tamper to keep the frozen bananas from bouncing around against the blades.

I and my wife are experimenting. We bought a nija 1st. I thought it was OK wife did not like the sharp blades. Alas the wife went to a demo and liked the vitamix and bought it. The 1st thing I tied to make was almond past for Banket (a Dutch pastry). The machine kept turning off because of overheating. Note: I put in 1and 1/2 cups of blanched almonds. Called customer service and they said 1. too many almonds, 2 I needed to put in additional oil until the paste became more viscous. 3. wait 45 minutes before I use the machine again.
I was not happy with the answer but have continue to explore with it and have made many veggie and fruit smoothies. Biggest Con at present is that we cannot put the base with container under the kitchen cabinets. It is just too tall.
Wife went to another demo for the BlendTec (which all my kids own). She liked it and bought it also. I have tried it and it works well also. Like you I like the operation of the Vitamx better. I like a knob for speed and a button to turn on and off. I find that for the most part I turn them all on high and let them rip. I also like the stuffer. With the blendtec I find I mst use a bit more liquid to get thngs to flow. Other wise I think they are fairly equal

I just returned my Blendtec to to Costco after 6 mos. I used it everyday but the top had been leaking for some time and I had to hold it down with a dishtowel on top to prevent explosions. Then, it started overheating on just green smoothies. Was researching the Healthmaster but reviews complain of motor and bearing problems, soooo, long story short, Costco has a Vitamix roadshow in a couple of weeks and I will pick one up there. I am as frugal as they come but this machine is used everyday and it a staple in my kitchen.

Haley, thank you for this information. And to others who offered their 2 cents. At 40, I really need to make some changes. I saw ad for nutri bullet and am intrigued. The smaller size may be less intimidating to a raw food 'wanna be' and just for my husband and me. Does any body have any review on that cute little gadget? Vitamix sounds great but pricey, however may be worth it. Thanks again and God bless you in your journey.

Stacy -- you've probably decided and made a purchase by now, but as a Vitamix owner for over 15 years, my advice is definitely to go with the Vitamix; it's a lifetime investment. It blends smooth smoothies -- even tough kale stems. My husband and I are usually here alone. Every evening in the summer -- and often in the winter, too -- we have blueberry or strawberry/raspberry fruit freeze, a luscious ice cream-like concoction made with frozen fruit, a little milk and yogurt, ground flax seed, 1 Tbsp. flax seed oil, honey and 5 ice cubes. My husband's bowl is heaped full of this treat, and I have a satisfying smaller portion. One could not make this much in the NutriBullet, and as Haley wrote, longevity is a factor. We have a Magic Bullet, which I use almost daily to make small portions of salad dressing. The Bullet is great for those small quantities that are too small for the Vitamix; but we're on our 2nd Bullet in 5 or 6 years. After trying 2 other blenders, one of which -- the KitchenAid -- broke after a week or two of use and the other was insufficient also, I said to my husband that, although it was awfully expensive ($350 new at the time), it looked like the Vitamix was our only option. He surprised me with it on my 50th birthday. What a wonderful present. I would not trade it for any other brand.
I especially like the 3 simple control switches. Besides the 64 oz. container, we have a 32 oz size, which might satisfy those who want their blender to fit under the upper kitchen cabinets (admittedly, a handy feature). We also have a dry container, but I don't notice any difference between grinding nuts in the regular container vs in the dry container.
I've taken it with me a few times on the plane (the blender container must travel in checked luggage because of the blade). At times it has drawn interested comments from impressed security inspectors. Though I might trade in some time for a new, quieter model, I would not trade our Vitamix for any other brand. It's indispensable for us.

Stacytx, I've just come across Haley's website after googling to get a comparison between the Vitamix and Healthmaster. Not sure if you made a decision by now on what blender to purchase, but here's another option for you - it is the Tribest Personal Blender. I purchased the Original one many years ago (I'm sure over 3 or 4 years) and if you are looking to make smoothies, health drinks, raw ice creams, or thick textured frozen fruit, the Tribest works very well for these. I have never been disappointed with its use. It emulsifies greens (especially Kale). My Tribest has given me years of enjoyable drinks and has just started to wear down. Rather than purchase another small blender, I decided to buy another larger capacity blender (I have a Healthmaster that does not work) to accommodate the capacity of foods prepared by blending. If you are interested, here's the website to take a look for yourself. http://www.tribestlife.com/product-category/blending
To all other readers, my recent purchase was the Vitamix over a Ninja System. The Vitamix came highly recommended but my choice was solidified after viewing a separate YouTube comparison between the two brands. Also, as mentioned above, I have a Healthmaster which disappointingly no longer works after just over a year or so. I was extremely pleased with it up to that point as it did everything I saw on the infomercial, including making hot soup. As other readers, I also had difficulty receiving a response to my communication to get a replacement motor. Because I live outside of the US, I stopped trying - hopefully, I will be able to get it fixed as I'm not in a hurry to throw it away. I am certainly looking forward though to using my Vitamix (which I purchased from Costco for $379), a good investment I believe. There's also the comfort in knowing that a well-established company takes pride in manufacturing a quality machine, stands by their brand by providing a 5-7 year warrantee and has the ability to recondition the blenders after years of use.
Haley, thanks for your opinion of all the brands. I'll be checking your site further to look for some recipes to try.
All the best Everyone!

Thank you so much for this information! I AM buying a Vitamix in 2 weeks and I cannot wait!!! I sat at Costco for an hour or so last night, watching demonstrations and tasting everything the demo lady made for us. Green smoothies, ice creams, hot soups, etc! Everything was absolutely delicious and perfect

Hi! I just returned a Ninja Master Prep after 3 days of use - it's great for raw Gazpacho, Salsa - but for green smoothies - well your product is gritty/sharp and not smooth. It was only $45 at Target. So a few days ago went to Bed Bath and Beyond, used a 20% off coupon and got the Blendtec - only $320 that way. Great machine - I've only done smoothies, tonight will do ice cream and the basic southwest soup version done at demo's. I guess I cannot imagine a better machine in that it does what I want it to with ease, filled to the brim, smooth as silk results. I just leave it out on the countertop ~ and the noise is fine as it's not ridiculous and it's only for a minute to two minutes in duration for my use. My friend got a Vitamix recently as a gift and he loved it - so got me hooked on this healthy passion of green drinks daily - I didn't have that kind of budget so just got the Blendtec instead. BB&B has a no hassle return policy so for the next few weeks or so if I do find a 'glitch' or a reason not to love it as is - I can switch over to Vitmamix I suppose. So maybe it's what you get used to. If your learning curve is done on one or the other as your 'first' baby - maybe that's the one you love best.... Vitamix is the only one I haven't tried yet - but I trust it's a dream as well. People are very passionate on their opinions - and have some very funny ideas too ... reading lots of reviews is very enlightening to say the least! For now my Blendtec seems to be simply amazing - and had I a full ability to choose with budget as an issue - I may have gone with Vitamix - but that wasn't the case so I just have fun with my new 'Boss' .... You have to name your machines right?

I bought the Ninja 1500 yesterday and I am returning it tomorrow. The single serving cups makes green juice smoothies very well however the 72oz pitcher leaves tons of pieces. I went ahead and ordered a Vitamix professional series last night.

I bought a vitamix about 3 weeks ago, I'm hooked. I use it everyday and when I'm away working I find myself craving a veggie fruit smoothie. The unit is built like a professional power tool. I bought the refurbished unit and it looks brand new. I still eat my ribs but now I always get a healthy serving of fruits and veggies everyday and some days that's all I'll have.

I have a ninja 1200 and it DEFINITELY makes ice cream -- 1200 Watts which is actually 100 more than healthmaster. It is a superior blender and much better deal than vitamix because you sacrifice hardly any blending power but get it for a giant fraction of the price.

Hi Jack! I was referring to Raw Vegan Ice Cream - made with frozen bannas. I'm sure that the ninja makes regular dairy ice cream without any issues, but it simply doesn't create the same consistency as my Vitamix. That being said, you are right - at a fraction of the cost....it's a wonderful buy!

I started out with the Vitamix for a few years. Worked fine but there were a few issues... it didn't fit assembled under my counter, I didn't like to have to use a tamper (just one more thing to wash and store) and the speed control rheostat was wearing out.
So then I got the Blendtec. Worked great too but I didn't like the controls as much. Then the Blendtec "Designer" model came out. It's the best so far. I like the controls much better than the standard BTec and the lowest speed is slower so it doesn't throw liquid up all over the lid when you turn it on. I think it's the best looking high end blender and is the easiest to keep clean, and is a bit quieter.
Other Blentec considerations:
-I have both container sizes. The Wildside container holds about 75 oz (not 44 oz) which I use for big batches of green smoothies, pureed yam soup etc. Vitamix is a bit smaller at about 65 oz.
-The smaller Blendtec container is better for grinding grains into flour, flax seed (only consume FRESHLY ground flax folks!!) nut butter etc
-No need for a tamper, it draws the food down, you just have to move the speed up and down for a few seconds if you've crammed it full of green etc.
-I found it works as well as the Vitamix for treats and is easier to get thicker food like Homous out.
The only thing I don't like is the Blendtec lid assembly. Liquids come up through the clear plastic part of the 2 piece top, especially when it's at full capacity. It doesn't go anywhere, I just pull it off and pour some water over it returning the smoothy all over the lid back int the container, but it's one extra step..

PS I see Oster finally has one out called "Versa" to compete with these two industry leaders. It only took them what, 45 years to figure out that some other companies were making real blenders that actually hold more than a couple of cups and will blend greens and veggies. It's getting some favorable favorable reviews, has a 7 yr warranty and is cheaper. But check the side by side reviews.
I haven't tried the new Ninja. Lets see if this one holds up as well as the VMix and BTec in about 5 years.
PPS. I haven't had a cold for 10 years since starting the green smoothies, I use lots of ginger, beet, carrot, cilantro, 1/2 organic lemon, almonds, goji, apples, hemp seed, kale, spinach, pinapple, banana etc. Truly undenatured "One World Whey" powder is another reason I never get sick.
PPSS. When my old toothless cat got older I used the Blentec to grind up her raw chicken with bones. Works great.
I'll close with this. Go organic folks, you're worth it. Pesticides are now implicate in Parkinson's and other nasty diseases, spend the extra on yourself and live happy & vital to a ripe old age.

There are many new Vitamixes that help with all of these options. ~The newest Vitamix - the 7500 has a new container that is short enough to fit under cabinets, but still the full 64 ounces large. While the Blendtec Wildside holds 75 ounces, you cannot fill it all the way, as you can with the Vitamix 64 ounce container.
~Vitamix now has several models that have pre-programmed settings just as the Blendtec does, in case you want to set it and walk away.
~The Blendtec pulls everything down only with enough water - if you don't want to add water to a dish - sauce, ice cream, etc....then you have to run the Blendtec multiple times or scrape it with a spatula to get everything down to the blades.
~For smoothies - the Blendtec is awesome. For most of what I make otherwise, I prefer the Vitamix.

Wow! What a lot of info! I really liked my Ninja (900 watts) until I read all of this. Now I'm a bit ashamed of it. I thought I was making really good smoothies every morning, but now I see that they are sub-standard. If these other machines do a better job than my Ninja I wouldn't be able to drink them. I would be too occupied standing around clapping. Seriously, I have never had a smoothie from anywhere other than my Ninja, so that is why I'm good with it. They are delicious and have all the protein (yogurt) and vitamins, minerals, and fiber (fruits, greens, oats, flax, almonds) that I need. I put in all in, turn it on, and let it rip until I see it's flowing inside. I can make almost a half gallon of the stuff, put it in my cooler in Mason jars and drink it all day. I'm a truck driver and I've gotten lots of looks and comments about getting out of my truck with a pink, or blue, or green drink in a Mason jar with a straw in it. I truly liked your side-by-side comparison and, if my Ninja ever quits, I'll read it again before buying my next blender. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Thank you for this very valuable information. I bought a Health Master in November of 2012 as a Christmas Present to myself. I didn't begin using it until after the New Year (2013) It broke last week as the part that turns the blade is metal going into plastic. NOT a good idea. I just called customer service up and they only have a 60 days warranty. (I had paid $200 ). Upon checking out the warranty on their website they do have a lifetime warranty on the motor but the rep didn't ever ask me "what broke". Not only could I barely understand him, he couldn't wait to get me off the phone and either the phone call dropped or as ?I suspect, he hung up on me. I had an option to do a survery at the beginning of the call but guess what?.....no survey!! If I would have read this blog before purchasing the Health Master I wouldn't have gone with it. But I've read it now, so thank you.

Why are there so many negative comments towards Haley about this? She solely just gave her own personal opinion and it's not like she's talking out of her butt, she actually did TRY each one out and according to her OWN personal opinion, her Vitamix came out on top. Yet there are people here that are obviously Blendtec followers that have to put in their two cents and say she's wrong, mainly about the whole ice cream bit. She stated perfectly clear that it was RAW VEGAN BANANA ICE CREAM that she was making, so obviously, anybody with common sense would know she's using frozen bananas in it.

When someone takes the time to not only test out 4 kitchen appliances but also writes a comparison piece about it, it drives me crazy to read such comments like "You're wrong!", "I disagree totally!", "Are you kidding? The Blendtec is so much better" blah blah blah. How can you guys even write this type of critique when you haven't tested out the 4 appliances yourself??

Because she's not telling the truth if you notice at the end there selling vitamix and I've heard both machine side-by-side in a vita mix was much louder and when you're dealing with people that buy high-end blenders they have high-end opinions she's bothered by the Blendtec doesn't come with a chamfer that's because you don't need one she was probably getting paid or some type a kickback from vita mix

Thank you and you seem really nice...I have unusual circumstances..I was a vegan in my mid-twenties to late thirties...life took some rough turns, then skipping the story, I ended up homeless in NY in the worst neighborhoods or living under subway tunnels..the reason I told you that is I destroyed my body for many years, living on all the worst food, the best think I ate then was Chef boyRdee..McD, processed horror food, but hunger is an intense motivator..anyway, God had a reason for that and I have slowly gotten out of hell, and he kept me alive and breathed life into me when I did not care anymore...so I like your faith..I did something today I've never done..I am now 59 and not in very good shape, so I have been thinking about going green again..I saw infomercial for nutribullet and because you can release all the great parts of nuts and greens, use everything, I did impulse buy and ordered it..an hour later I saw add for Ninja which showed them slicing veggies for salad, using a smaller version of nutribullet and sauces and veggie burgers...I got scared and thought maybe I made a mistake so I wanted to ask you what you thought of the Nutribullet...I am on small disability and cannot spend $400 on juicer..but your opinion would be nice as well as any suggested books to regain health or websites that help also..thanks for your video, looking forward to going through your archive...very smart about not heating, kills all the good stuff, you are a smart brave Spiritual friend..Michael Paige you can write to me at

Michael, I'm on this blog because my wife bought the bullet 3-4 years ago. She starts the morning every day cramming it full of greens, nuts and frozen chunks of fruit. It's starting to get a bit clunky, so we are looking to upgrade to vita mix or blend tec, but that bullet ($100 version) is still going. For a smoothie machine on a budget, it rocks, and I laughed at her when she bought it. Who's laughing now? :)

I currently use an Oster blender for making smoothies using frozen and fresh fruit, as well as a few veggies like spinach and carrots, plus I usually add almond milk or fresh squeezed juice. I tell you this so you know what I am looking for. I am considering the Ninja and was wondering if the problem with the Ninja has anything to do with the quality or how long it lasts? I have had my Oster for years, but I only use it for fresh salsas and smoothies, I use my food processor for everything else. I only need something to replace my blender, not also be a food processor. In your opinion would the Ninja be a good buy or a waste of my money?

Ninja is a good buy - but it most likely won't last more than a few years with daily use. But for those years, you will enjoy it! Go for the Ninja that is JUST the blender, and the most expensive one they offer - that is worth the money. :)

I have a Ninja 1100 and think it's terrable overall due to only one reason. I could be wrong, but I'm almost certain it's the design of the blade.

A regular low-end blender blends smoother because the blade's closer to the bottom of the pitcher and creates a cyclone that pulls everything into the blade. The Ninja bottom-most blade on the ninja is not close to the bottom of the pitcher. I've done side by side and there's no doubt that a cheap blender makes much smoother smoothies than the ninja's which are not enjoyable. You can put cantaloupe seeds in a Ninja and blend for 5 minutes but they all come out untouched and whole.

I just use a cheap blender now but am considering my options unles there's a better blade for the 72oz ninja pitcher but i don't think it exists. The ninja is strong as noted, it's has the big engine. You can stuff the ninja with hard carrots, raw potatoes etc and it won't jam, but it won't blend smooothly. I can make frozen banana ice cream with the ninja unlike the blogger, but my cheap low-end one makes it too.

I'm considering my options for something better than the cheap basic blender i use now because I still want smoother and the ability to smoothly blend wet seeds of mellons etc, hopefully can make dough as good as kneeding, and the cheap blender pitchers are tiny for on the go and a pain to clean.

For blending dry things, I'm amazed how well a cheap coffee grinder works. They can make powdered sugar from unprocessed rock sugar and can blend flax seeds into such a fine powder that it cakes up in the machine almost like clay. (Definitely read up on flax seeds and omega 3 to omega 6 ratios and include them in your smoothies for more omega 3 if you don't know).

Don't get carried away over blending things because you can oxidize etc it and lose nutrition.

Don't put any animal products in any blender or it voids the warranty and kills the engine and dulls the blades and messes up you house's electricity.

Animal products? Isn't milk considered an animal product? Beef broths?

Also, the Ninja commercials show making meatloaf, chicken burgers, etc. in the smaller bowl.

I've never heard of animal products voiding a warranty or doing anything to the electricity in my house.

After reading all of the comments, just want to share some info on personal experience with the Healthmaster. The healthmaster does what it says and is comparable to the VItamix at half the price. Now for hte bad news....I have now two healthmaster motors. The one I bought and the extra they sent me when I paid for a new pitcher andf instead the sent another motor. Did I say P{itcher? I meant 5 pitchers....that is how many I have had to shell out 50-79 dollars for over the past three years. The bearings are cheap and wear out quickly rendering only brown rusty goo all over the motor housing from the pitchers wearing out. I had ordered the 5th pitcher about three months ago and was still waiting to hear back whe it would be off of back order. Cancelled the order last night and bought the Vitamix. It was more yes but the reality is, after spending $200 bucks on the HM and another $250 on pitchers, anyone would be better off ignoring the HM. Works well for a while but just doesn't hold up.Montel hasn't addressed the thousands of complaints either. all prettty much the same saying brown goo is coming from the motor or the pitcher ( actually its's just rust from the bad bearings). THe funny thing is after looking at the Vitamix pitcher design, it is the same only a much higher quality bearing....same motor base as Montel's only square rather than round. Appears the Montel is just a cheap copy using poorer parts. Please folks, don't waste your time on the Healthmaster. You really do get what you pay for! I expect the Vitamix to last for many years.

I have always wanted a Vitamix, but instead own a HealthMaster, a NutriBullet, a 2 or 3 Magic Bullets, and have had several Oster blenders, and a high end Kitchenaid blender that I received as a wedding gift. The NutriBullet has a nice, larger and wider cup than the Magic Bullet and is great for making quick, individually portioned smoothies and is a nice price at about $80 (w/ 20% off coupon at Bed Bath and Beyond). I burned through at least 5 Osters and the very expensive Kitchenaid Blender was a diaster. I am still using my HealthMaster and it makes many kinds of smoothies and soups (with all ingredients completely blended); however I am on my third replacement HealthMaster. I had two motors burn out and for $30 each time, they sent me a new motor. Finally after two rreplacemtn motors, HealthMaster replaced my entire machine with their newest machine with the BPA free container at no cost. I have had no problems with my newest HealthMaster machine, so I'm a fan I think HealthMaster had to improve their machine if they were going to compete in the high-end blender market, as people are getting smarter and realizing that a $400-500 "investment" for a quality all-purpose kitchen tool like the Vitamx is worth it. I would say that I continue to be happy with my new and improved HealthMaster (also it no longer has any locking mechanisms), but if my current HealthMaster dies, I will buy a Vitamix.

Without owning one, I would say if you're going to spend the money on a really great blender - go get the VitaMix. Friends who own it, rave about it. I saw a demonstration at Costco - I'm sold. Don't get the HealthMaster. Maybe get the Ninja. At Bed Bath & Beyond, you can also get the 20% discount. Although, I don't have experience with that blender. I do own the HealthMaster. I got suckered and got it from the infomercial. Yes, it's large and noisy, but it does the job for now. I don't think the VitaMix is not noisy, but maybe not as noisy. I blend green smoothies daily. I have also made sorbets and soups. Yes, the locking system is a little annoying, but like most things you get used to it. Soups can take up to 8 minutes to do so from cold to hot. (Trick..you can pour in hot water as well). I have had mine for 4-5 years. Thankfully, I haven't had any motor issues. But my one big complaint, the pitcher leaks. If you have a new pitcher, it won't but eventually it will. Also where it connects, grease can be seen. I've already gone through 2 pitchers. And right now, I really am contemplating getting the Vitamix 5200 at Costco. They have a deal going on, but the price of $499 is a killer right now. I know it will be well worth the money, but may have to wait.

Hi Robin!

Yes, I've heard similar things regarding the longevity of the Healthmaster. However, if that appliance helped you get to where you are at now - then awesome! When it IS time to upgrade to the Vitamix, I always recommend the reconditioned machines. You get a brand new container with a motor that has been refurbished to be like new for half the price of the new ones. You can get a 64 oz container & base for $329. If you put in this code when you check out, you get free shipping ($25 savings!): 06-005351.

If you or anyone else is considering the Ninja, you should be aware it contains LEAD. It actually says right on the bottom of most boxes: "Caution contains LEAD, wash your hands after use". Also, the blades are extremely sharp, and need to be removed each time for washing...dangerous if you lose your grip.

My Blendtec definitely makes vegan banana ice cream - just drop in frozen bananas and you get smooth, rich ice cream. I'm not sure why it would work fine for me, but not for you...

Hi Gary,

I'm so glad that you have mastered banana ice cream in your Blendtec. I, personally, have tried multiple times and it's just not as smooth, not as solid (more liquidy due to more time in the blender), and not as easy as when I use my Vitamix with my tamper. That being said, perhaps with enough time I would figure it out. But for the same price (CHEAPER in NOVEMBER!)...I'd rather get a Vitamix than a Blendtec. Just my opinion, of course. :)

Biggest mistake was buying the healthmaster, they should call it the junkmaster. My son and I use the nutribullet at least 5 or 6 times a day to make great green smoothies, we fill it up kale, nuts fruits and ice with no problems. Love it for the price and hope to some day get a blendtec or vitamix since I am also going to an all raw way of eating!

I don't want to use a blender with a plastic pitcher. I know the vitamix pitcher is BPA free but really don't want to make hot soups in plastic. Any suggestions?

Thank you for posting this thoughtful review. I've been lusting (yes, lusting is certainly the correct word) after a vitamix for years and years now. A couple of friends of mine just bought the latest and greatest Vitamix models, and are practically wedded to the things. I swear, they get all starry eyed with that faraway voice whenever they talk about their blenders... it was almost like watching somebody on their honeymoon. ;) I had a roommate with a Vitamix, but that's the closest I've come to actually owning one. Le sigh.
We have a modest blender- just a black and decker. It was a good starter though, and only forty dollars at Target. It does soft fruits and greens, which I feel is a good place for a beginner smoothie enthusiast to begin their journey. My junky food processor makes fabulous raw banana ice cream, so even though it looks like hell I keep it around for my nanner ice cream fix.
Since I still haven't the funding for a Vitamix, I've decided to at least upgrade to the 1500 watt Ninja kitchen system. I want to include harder veggies in my smoothies, and my little blender just isn't going to cut it. Hopefully by the time the Ninja fizzles out we can *gasp* take the plunge and purchase the fanciest most tricked out Vitamix on the market.
Just wanted to mention to people who are on more limited budgets- Fingerhut (they have a catalog and an online site) carries the HealthMaster, the Ninja Mega Kitchen System, and the Nutribullet. You can purchase them on pre approved credit, and then make payments. We are going to buy ours this way and pay it off over four months. Payments on the Ninja, for example, would be a minimum of 16.99 a month. (Obviously, you want to pay it off sooner than just the minimum, or you end up spending an extra sixty dollars over time, but it IS an option) Thought that information might be of use to some of you who would like a fancier blender, but can't pay for it all up front.

I have the original Health Master which has not been used very much. I am a petite person and find it had for me to work. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in purchasing this machine. I am asking $100, but would consider best offer.

I drink a lot of smoothies that contain frozen fruit and various vegetables. I was using a standard blender that could be purchased anywhere for normal household use.

Thank you Riley for the review. I have been hesitating buying a blender for a long time and needed a comparison. I too was drawn in with Montell's infomercial. I love puree and was hoping to find other machines that heated-up food. I've seen the Ninja and the accessories on shelves and are tempted to buy one because of the small gadgets available. Thank you for help with that too. I don't cook much, maybe two machines will answer all my needs.Vitamix and Ninja together.

I have owned a Ninja Master Prep Pro for more than a year. I don't use it every day. Cost and performance were strong considerations when I was shopping for this. I have made the banana ice cream, with no lumps and very fluffy peanut butter in the smallest container. I have been and am still impressed with the blade system. Since I don't use a dishwasher I find the containers to be difficult to clean. I would prefer something smooth with no crevices and raised lines. Even tho this is the smallest motor model I am very happy with its performance. But I need to stress that I'm only one person in my household and rarely use the Ninja two days in a row. I have no experience with this product for heavy, daily use.

Thank you for your kindness in doing the hard work for us comparing the integrity of the blenders. Have you ever tried the Shred Emulsifier developed by Dr Ian Smith?

I'm also very interested to see if anyone has purchased the Shred Emulsifier! I recently purchased the Oster Versa 1100 watt blender/food processor. I got a great deal at Target as it came with two 20oz individual blend-n-go cups as well! I heard you can use a Ball pint mason jar with the Oster to make nut butters. Would anyone know if that is true?

A lot of the commenters here seem to be very defensive because they spent hundreds of dollars on inferior machines. I own none of these devices but will one day purchase a vitamix.

I cook professionally and at every restaurant I have ever worked at and will likely ever work at they use only vitamixes. The very few restaurants I have heard of that use something else don't use a blendtec.

We use vitamixes to make everything that has been discussed and more. Whether or not you can get your non vitamix device to do things better than the post describes or do things the post says your device can't, rest assured that it takes longer, is more difficult, and creates an inferior final product.

Restaurants get by on a very tight budget and only buy expensive products if they are worth it, only if they are the best. The vitamix is worth it and it is the best. 99% of restaurants and cooking professionals are not wrong. Buy Vitamix.

My roomate bought a Vitamix last year; yesterday I was blending cottage cheese and it turned off by itself.
We contacted customer support, they offered to send him a list of repairing parts he could buy.
Long story short, their vitamix warranty for 7 years is non existent. So don't fall for that. I would dare to say they use high price marketing (people feel they are getting something better by being more expensive) but lacks quality and design (the vitamix model he got looks kinda cheap), actually looks very cheap for a blender which actually costs over $650.
If your vitamix works, great! I'm just sorry for those who didn't have as much luck and faced their lack of customer support :p

Hi Haley,
Thanks for your blog! I am torn between the Vitamix 5200 and the Ninja. My mom has the Vitamix 5200 and I absolutely LOVE it. I have been drinking green smoothies EVERYDAY for a 10 day detox and cleanse. I want to continue making smoothies after my detox. Which blender would you recommend for basically making Smoothies out of the Vitamix or Ninja?

I own the Health Master. I paid $89 for it about 9 months ago in a department store. I don't use it every day. I have made several smoothies, soup, and pineapple ice cream from frozen pineapples. I considered when I purchased it, that it was incredibly cheap and perhaps not a good investment. So far, none of the terrible things that others have described has happened. It is 1200 watts. I think if it last a couple of years, it will be worth it. Vitamix, even refurbished, is current out of my budget range. I probably don't use it as much as some others.

I used to have the metal Vitamix and loved it but had a house fire and lost it. So put the Healthmaster on layWay at Boscov's (also online I think) for $89. Haven't gotten it yet but was hoping it would be as good as my Vitamix. Now not so sure. But not $150.00.

After having two VitaMixes (neither of which worked) I'm definitely not going to waste the money on a third. VitaMix exchanged the first one I bought, but refused to exchange the replacement they sent because I didn't "buy" the replacement. So I was stuck with a crappy machine and out hundreds of dollars.

Buyers beware. VitaMix is great - if it works. "If" being the operative word.

So for the all in all you would go with Vitamix to make ice cream/food process/ crush nuts/ puree chunks and don't see chunks and don't have to buy separate stuff? I wanted to find an all in one blender essentially and I've tried the Ninja before and its chunky.

Nice article, I love my Vitamix!

Vitamix is one of the most widely-recognised blender brands around, and for good reason.

The Vitamix A2300 has a lot of great features, especially considering its low price point. It even boasts wireless connectivity technology, so if you’re a fan of advanced blenders, you won’t be disappointed with this one.

If anyone is interested, I wrote an article on the Vitamix A2300 https://energeticlifestyle.com/vitamix-a2300-review/

Stay extra healthy during this time!

God comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. Even when we are weighed down with troubles, it is for your comfort and salvation! For when we ourselves are comforted, we will certainly comfort you. Then you can patiently endure the same things we suffer. We are confident that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in the comfort God gives us. (2 Corinthians 3-7)
